This is Love & Light Spiritist Group Children Sponsoring Program, which was created in response to the wish expressed by some persons in the United States to help extremely poor children in Brazil. We provide assistance in the areas of nutrition, health and education. By being able to provide the three basic needs – food, health and education – the Program will eventually be able to empower these children to overcome poverty. Frequently asked questions

1. How does Sponsorship work?
To participate in the program, sponsors must commit themselves to the program and contribute with a monthly amount of $50.00. Some people give more, others less, according to everyone’s means and wishes. This money is sent to the children in the form of food, health and education. Education covers monthly tuition, school supplies, snacks, uniform, reinforcement, school events. Even though the program officially sponsors one child, all members of his or her family benefit from the monthly delivery of food baskets. We also donate clothing and try to provide for other urgent needs that may rise within our possibilities.

At this time, the children this program sponsors 10 children who live in the outskirts of Valença (Bahia) and in a rural zone. The program provides assistance through, what we call, Humanitarian Inclusion so as to avoid an exclusionary character to the program. Humanitarian Inclusion is a set of steps that provides relief to moral and structural misery. In Humanitarian Inclusion we find special children with Autism who participate in a psych-pedagogic follow-up program. We assist children and families from two institutions which are:

- Organização Social “Mais Vida” (Social Organization “More Life”). We donate material and basic maintenance resources to 80 children in the soccer school and 40 children in the day-care’s guitar course. See the web site for “More Life”: http://banca-comunitaria-mais-vida.jimdo.com/

- CAVS (Center for Social Assistance and Valorização Social). Center for Social Assistance and Valorization). We donate guitars to be used at the music school. We financed this course by paying for a guitar teacher.

2. What can I do to participate in the program?
After the initial contact, the prospect sponsor fills out a form, makes the initial payment, and will then be given the name of the sponsored child, and information about the child.

3. How can I make my monthly monetary contribution?
Payment must be made on the 1st Sunday or 1st Monday of each month. It can be made in person at Love & Light through our Finance Department or through:

a) Our Paypal account: amoreluzapadrinhamento@gmail.com;

b) Bank deposit at Wells Fargo (EUA), 650 Anderson Ave, Cliffside Park, NJ 07010. Checking account: 2000058995275. Aba: 02120025. Spiritist Group Love & Light/ Apadrinhamento (Kid’s Sponsor Program);

c) Bank deposit at Banco do Brasil (Brazil) AG. 0545-2. C/P 27448-8. CPF 165 681 095-68 (Norma Bonfim).

4. Can I deduct my donations in my income tax?
Yes. The Love & Light Spiritist Group (GEAL) was founded in New Jersey as a non-profit public organization in accordance to Section 501 (c) 3 of the US Income Tax Code. EIN # 22-3792976. Our Finance Department issues a statement of your contributions annually for income tax purposes (USA)

5. How does the connection between sponsor and child work?
The connection is done through the program. Each child has more than one sponsor. The donation from only one sponsor is not enough to satisfy all three areas covered by our program (food, health and education). Also, we have a reserve fund for emergencies. This is why we always say that everyone in the program sponsors all the children and their families.

6. Is it possible to follow-up with the work that is being done in Brazil?
The Program coordinators in Brazil make frequent visits to the children and their families; they deliver food baskets, school meals and supplies, clothes, etc. Everything is documented through photos and reports. Also, everything is posted and updated in our blog. Visit our blog: http://amoreluzapadrinhamento.blogspot.com/

7. Are there other ways to support the program?
Yes, by supporting our fundraising dinners and by telling your friends and people you know that you are sponsoring a child in Brazil. Demonstrate to them how happy you are in being part of this project.

8. What is the duration of the program? What happens when a sponsor leaves the program?
The program is scheduled to sponsor a child up to the time he or she finishes grammar school (1 to 5th grades). However, at that point sponsors will have the option to sponsor another child who already is or who will become part of the program. All monies received from the sponsors are very important to assure that the child and his or her family will be provided for. They depend on this monthly help. However, if for some reason a sponsor cannot afford paying for the program anymore, he or she should notify us with enough antecedence, so that we will have time to replace him or her.

9. Can I send a gift to my sponsored child?
If you wish to give a gift to your sponsored child, we suggest an additional monetary donation. Love & Light will then apply that specific amount for the purchase and delivery of items that Love & Light believes will satisfy the greatest need of the child at that specific moment in time.

10. Can I send messages to my sponsored child?
Yes. The child will be very happy to receive letters, postcards, Christmas cards and photos of people who are helping improve his/her life. All mailing will be done through Love and Light. Please hand your letters, cards, photos, etc. to one of the Program’s Coordinators and we will personally deliver them to the child. This direct delivery is part of the celebration of the tie that exists among the program, you (sponsor) and the child. It is very important that your letters are positive and offer encouragement. Some instructions regarding sending messages aim to protect your privacy and that of the sponsored child, and are based on the Child and Adolescent By-laws. Avoid sending pictures in swimsuits or depicting a luxurious life style, contrary to the child’s reality; avoid writing about religion or politics. People may have a different perspective and may feel uncomfortable with the subject. This gives us freedom to work with anyone, regardless of ethnic background, sex, ancestors, religious beliefs or political affiliation; do not give your address, phone number or other contact information. This will protect you from being contacted by third parties not authorized by the program, for which we are not liable.

11. Can I visit my sponsored child in Brazil?
Visiting your sponsored child and his/her family and community is an excellent way for you to get to know his/her reality. If you are planning a visit to your sponsored child, please contact us with antecedence so that we can plan your visit.
